Obligatory pre-NaNoWriMo Post

Don't tell anyone, but this year, for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), I'm not actually writing a novel.
GASP!
I'm going to finish rewriting the fantasy story that I have been working on all year (and all of last year, too) and, then, with the time left over, I'm going to write several short stories set in the same world, expanding on some of the characters.

This year, I've seen a lot of blog posts presenting tips on how to succeed at NaNoWriMo. I thought I'd add my own advice. Here are some things that have helped me in the past and are helping me currently:

1. Turn OFF the Internet.
If you're like me, the Internet is a huge distraction. It's so easy to stop writing to check email or Facebook or Twitter (or, if you're a weird music geek, to look up the biography of the composer or band that you're listening to). These things may only take five minutes (or, half an hour as you find out that Jeff Lynne, leader of the group ELO—whom you are currently listening to—was the one who played "Something" with Dhani Harrison at the Beatles 50 Years in America concert which means, of course, that you have to go and watch that video, which thus inspires you to do a Google search of what Dhani Harrison is up to these days, which then leads you back to Youtube to listen to some of his music, which then leads to five minutes of wondering whether Dhani Harrison is George Harrison's son or George Harrison's clone), but that's five minutes that you could have spent writing.
In addition, when I'm constantly interrupting my writing, it's harder for me to get back into the story.
A few weeks ago, I unchecked the little box on my computer that says "connect [to the Internet] automatically," so that, when I want to go online, I have to manually click "connect." This tiny change has made such a huge difference in my writing. With the Internet turned off, I have found that the temptation to go browsing has almost completely disappeared. I've written about 35,000 words in the past two weeks during the time that I normally would have wasted on email, social media, Youtube, and Netflix!

2. Reward yourself.
After I get significant writing done (which, right now, is rewriting at least one chapter a day), I allow myself to turn on the Internet as a reward. I can answer emails, read blogs, look at Twitter, or watch videos on Youtube or Netflix.
A second reward that I'm instituting in honor of NaNoWriMo is a candy reward. For every 1,000 words that I write, I may eat one mini Kit Kat. This is also a lesson in self-control.
Rewards can be anything from a piece of candy every x-amount of words (I would suggest every 500 or 1,000 words) to a thirty minute TV show after the finish of each chapter (that's what I did for a past NaNoWriMo).

3. Hide the chocolate.
I've learned not to leave my chocolate lying around the house because, sooner, rather than later, it will disappear. So, I've taken to hiding my Kit Kat reward in my bedroom where I know prying fingers won't find it.
Hiding the chocolate can be beneficial not only because it keeps it from being stolen from its rightful eater, but also because it forces one to get up to go an fetch it. During NaNoWriMo (and a writer's career in general), it is all too easy to become a stagnant extension of your chair. Keeping your reward across the house forces you to rise (though not necessarily shine) and stretch your legs every once in a while.

4. Write even when you don't want to.
Sometimes, especially toward the end of NaNoWriMo, it's hard to keep writing. By this time, your story has probably become a quagmire of inane babble. Your characters resemble a wet piece of cardboard more than people. Your plot... wait, what plot? The best thing to do during these trying times are to keep writing. Who cares if your sentences aren't correct, if your characters are soggy, and if your plot is nonexistent? That's what editing (at a later date, not during NaNoWriMo) is for. Even when you're tired, and even when you're feeling like your story is a hopeless mess, just keep writing. When you have a completed manuscript at the end of November, you'll be glad that you persevered.

5. Have some extra words written, just in case.
Nearly every Thanksgiving, my family escapes into Canada to visit relatives. And who wants to seclude themselves in a cold, back bedroom to write when there is family around? Not me, certainly! So, I always make sure I have a few thousand extra words stored up for when I go away, or if I'm too tired to write, or if my day is so packed full that I don't have time to pound out my daily word count. Usually, I end up writing these extra words on the weekends, when I'm not doing anything else.

6. Get involved.
Grab a friend and have a Word War—see who can write the most words in a set amount of time!
Or, go on Twitter and participate in Word Sprints (@NaNoWordSprints). For the past few years, even though I didn't have a Twitter account, NaNoWordSprints has been my best friend during November. I actually joined Twitter (@agwerff) a few weeks ago just so that I could Tweet along with the other Word Sprinters this year.
If you are brave, find out what your local region has planned for November. I live near a big city, so there are always events at libraries and coffee shops where my fellow Wrimos gather to write. I went to one two years ago and got a free sticker.
For those who live too far away to participate in live events (or, for those who only leave their hermitages every few years to attend Hermits United meetings), never fear! There are Virtual Write-Ins every week on NaNoWriMo's Youtube Channel.

7. Have fun!
The goal of NaNoWriMo is to exit November with a 50,000 word novel under your belt (or, on your hard drive). But another, perhaps more important, goal is to have fun writing a novel!

Do any of you have NaNoWriMo tips to share? If so, comment below!

Woohoo!!

WOOHOO!!! I reached 50,000 words tonight!!

I'm not validating my word count until the 30th, though, because I still have many more words to write. I'm getting to the When-will-this-story-end?!?!?! phase of writing. The next little bit should be more exciting, though. Maybe it's just because I wrote 2,500 words today while I wanted to do something else instead.

~~~
In other exciting news, I finished Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott the other night! Now I've started reading Persuasion by Jane Austen. I'm enjoying it so far!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
NaNoWriMo day 22
I'm just back from seeing the movie Big Hero 6 with my friend and now I'm ready to do some writing!
2:14:
2:47: I've only written two pages. But that's two more pages than I had half an hour ago! I'm going to try get to three pages before 3:00, and then I will go play a board game with my dad.
Listening to: Catfish Row by George Gershwin.
Last sentence: "No, she's not dead yet."
2:52: What does it mean to have your voice "thick with emotion"?
2:52 cont. ARGH! I can't write a sad, sappyish, emotion-filled scene for the life of me! Here I am, with a character dying of a poisoned wound... and I write. "No, she's not dead yet, but she will be soon."
*facepalm* ABBEY: THIS IS NOT MONTY PYTHON! YOU CAN'T QUOTE MONTY PYTHON IN YOUR NOVEL! Not only does it change a serious moment into a slapstick one, but is it also plagiarism!! *slap slap slap*
Okay. Eleven words in eight minutes doesn't cut it. GET GOING, GIRL!
3:09: Off to play a board game, and practice piano too, I think. See you later!
4:50: Back from the game! It's a really fun, quick, Star Wars card game. The Dark Side was victorious. >:] Mwahaha... I've written almost another page. That puts me at four. I'll get a fifth done and then go practice piano. Would you like to know what I'm playing?
Here you go:
5:08: Okay, I lied... I'm finishing up my six pages right now. I can't stop writing yet!
Listening to: The Friends of Mr. Cairo by Jon and Vangelis.
Last sentence: "He nearly scratched my eyes out when I wouldn't let him come with us."
5:24: There we go, my six pages are written for tonight, though I will definitely write more later. I'm at an exciting part! Here's a hint:
Listening to: Nothing.
Last sentence: They clattered through the town, receiving many odd looks, and then they were in the wild lands.
6:51: Time toooo.... start writing.... *some words in a different language* la la la la... LA LA LA, LA LA LA LA LAAAA!!! Time to start wri-i-ting...
7:22: Look, I made a pencil-shaving bookmark!
...No, it doesn't really help my writing... except that now I have a sharpened pencil!
Listening to: A Sarah Brightman concert on youtube
Last sentence: "I can't leave her alone" (unfinished sentence. Oh yeah. Sometimes I get busy doing other things and forget to finish writing and a week later I'll come back and find an unfinished sentence and I have no clue how I was going to end it).
8:55: I'm clocking out with nine pages! Woohoo!
NaNoWriMo stats.
Anyone else see Big Hero 6? Anyone else think it was super cool, but a little too sad for an animated kid's film? (Unless kid's are more resilient these days... That could be true. There were a bunch of little kids in the theater when I went to see Star Trek Into Darkness. Um, yeah, bad parenting decision, in my opinion.)
NaNoWriMo: Day 1
My Saturday was empty... and then I found out we had hair appointments... and then a wedding came out of no where (not mine)... and suddenly my Perfect NaNoWriMo-ing day went out the window! Oh well, I will still manage. The wedding isn't for another hour, so let's see how many works I can wrack up before then!
11:50: I'm beginning to think writing this book out by hand was not the right idea...
12:16: I got three of my daily six pages done and now I need to take a shower! Perchance you will not hear from me again until this afternoon or evening.
3:34: Back from the wedding and it's time to write again! I'm going to try get ahead today because it's always good to get ahead.
Listening to: Pandora radio on a shuffle mix of Elton John, Paul McCartney, Vince Guaraldi, and Antonio Vivaldi.
Last sentence: "I'll tell you about it later tonight, but just let me rest first."
3:48: I just finished my fourth page!
Listening to: Blackbird, sung by Paul McCartney.
Last sentence: "I think we're safe to talk freely down here."
4:07: Onto page six!
Listening to: Another One Bites the Dust-ah! Dun dun dun dun dun dun. By Queen.
Last Sentence: "The leaders with a particular vision and the ability to inspire others."
4:41: Nearly finished with page seven. I've made my word count for today! Huzzah! I will keep writing until 5:00 and then take a break to watch a Doctor Who episode.
Listening to: Another Queen song. Can anybody, find meee... somebody to looove...
Last sentence: "You're welcome. Well, I couldn't let you die!"
Word count: 1,700ish words.
5:25: So much for a Doctor Who break... I'm on a role and am now at nine pages. I really want to finish this chapter. One or two more pages... Maybe I'll just keep writing until I get to the end of the chapter. Hee hee.
5:53: All right, I'm done for the day. Ten and a half pages! Not too shabby. And I wrote one whole chapter. That doesn't often happen in one sitting/day.
Listening to: The end of a Star Trek episode in the background.
Last sentence: Draegond didn't like that look.
Final word count for day 1: About 2,900 words! Huzzah!
For those of you doing NaNoWriMo, how many words have YOU gotten on this first day?
Live long and prosper.
Beautiful Books Linkup #1
Once upon a time there was a linkup called Beautiful People which asked questions about writer's characters. I discovered it just as it was winding dying... but lately, the Notebook Sisters have revived it! Only, during the next few months, in honor of NaNoWriMo*, they are doing a book-version of Beautiful People called Beautiful Books. You can read all about it HERE.
What better way to prepare for NaNoWriMo, than to answer fifteen questions about my project?
1. What came first: characters or plot idea? Are you a plotter or a pantser?
If I remember correctly, a snippet of plot came first (they usually do). We were in the Midwest visiting my grandparents last December and I went for a walk in the snow in blue jeans and by the time I got back inside, I couldn't feel my thighs. I thought, "Frozen thighs—that sounds like a good description! I should make that happen to a character in the snow. And what if that character was an elf who could walk on top of the snow? And he had to help a princess struggle through the drifts?"
I've since nixed the elf-walking-on-snow idea, but the princess and the snow stayed, and that simple scene morphed into a book.
I tend to be more of a plotter, though with this book I've challenged myself not to write an outline. While writing without an outline is fun and allows the plot to change and develop as I go along, I dread having to wade through the shifting storyline when I go back to edit.
2. Do you have a title and/or a “back-cover-blurb”?
*groan* Don't make me even THINK about a title yet; I have no clue. Here's the blurb I put on the NaNoWriMo website: "The hag has been kidnapped and the misfit and the princess—along with their merry band of tag-alongs—must rescue her."
3. What word count are you aiming for when your novel is finished?
Somewhere around 100,000 words. At least half of that has already been written. The other half will be written during NaNoWriMo.
4. Sum up your novel in 3 sentences.
Uhhh... (Does that count as one of my sentences? Does that one?) There, I'm done! Just kidding, I'll do a serious one...
A book about a princess who must learn about civilization after being trapped, all alone, her whole life. A book about a misunderstood, mistrusted man who would rather hide away and ignore his problems than accept who he is. A book about a world that is so much bigger than anyone realizes (including the author).
5. Sum up your characters in one word each.
Rozella: Clueless.
[Spoilers-if-I-were-to-reveal-his-name-let's-call-him-Mr.F]: Misguided.
Draegond: Mysterious. (Even though he's not supposed to be.)
Lynnie: Sweet.
King John: Manipulative.
Hag: Grumpy.
Mangle: Naive.
King Francis: Cocky.
6. Which character are you most excited to write? Tell us about them!
I'm really looking forwards to introducing Mangle. He's a bard who speaks only in poetry or song, so I'm excited to delve into that!
Mangle the Bard? Possibly, though he needs brown hair.
7. What about your villain? Who is he, what is his goal?
King John is my villain. He wants to rule over the whole Kingdom and depose the other four kings.
8. What is your protagonist’s goal? And what stands in the way?
Mr. F's goal is to get out of prison, somehow survive, and live his own life far away from people and responsibility. Prison bars stand in his way, obviously, and also the person who put him there in the first place: King John. Later on, his goal becomes to rescue various damsels in distress (such as the kidnapped Hag) and reunite with his family.
9. What inciting incident begins your protagonist’s journey?
King John orders Mr. F to rescue Princess Rozella, who has been trapped in a tower since she was a baby.
Inspiration for Rozella. I believe this is Barbara Kent, but I'm not sure because I didn't write it down.
10. Where is your novel set?
A made-up land with no name (yet).
11. What are three big scenes in your novel that change the game completely?
When Hag is kidnapped, when Mr. F escapes, and when Rozella is shot. (A theme with my books seems to be that the hero needs to escape from behind bars... hmmm...)
12. What is the most dynamic relationship your character has? Who else do they come in contact with or become close to during the story?
Mr. F's most dynamic relationship is with Draegond, his best friend. Draegond is the only one he trusts completely and who knows all his secrets. He also has a bond with Hag, because they are both outcasts and because they are both different.
Draegond looks like a mix between Patrick Dempsey and Patrick Jane (whose real name I can't remember).
Strangely, Rozella's most dynamic relationship is probably with her cat, Alonzo. He was her sole companion while she was growing up and even though he can't talk back, Rozella told him all her secrets. Rozella's also has a dynamic relationship with Mr. F, whom she longs to get to know better, but can't—because he won't let her in, though mostly because she's engaged to King John. She also has a special bond with her mother and brother.
"Allons-y Alonzo!" You don't know how happy looking up cat pictures made me... I used to search for cat pictures all the time when I did Warrior Cats roleplays. I found this picture on a Warriors roleplay site... his name is Redstorm.
13. How does your protagonist change by the end of the novel?
Mr. F embraces who is and shrugs off the robe of laziness and cowardice that he has been wearing.
14. Do you have an ending in mind, or do you plan to see what happens?
I know exactly what is going to happen. *evil grin*
What? No, I'm not going to tell you. Well, I can tell you that there is a battle (because what good fantasy novel doesn't end with a huge battle?) Actually, that's about all there is to the ending... of course there is the little matter of what happens after the battle, but I haven't got that completely figured out yet.
15. What are your hopes and dreams for your book? What impressions are you hoping this novel will leave on your readers and yourself?
Eventually I would like to have it published, or publish it myself. Next year I plan to do extensive plotting (both in character, plot, and theme) and then rewrite the book numerous times. I don't expect it will be finished any time soon, as it is such a massive project.
I hope this novel shows readers that even though it's hard to be human being sometimes, the solution isn't running away and hiding; responsibility can't be hid from. Hey, this sounds like the story of Jonah!
Live long and prosper.
NaNoWriMo Approacheth
Only 24 days, 4 hours, 26 minutes, and 45 seconds until NaNoWriMo! 40 seconds 39, 38, 37...
I'm not starting a new novel which, technically, is against the rules... but since I know the rules, I'm allowed to break them, right? Oh, that only has to do with writing conventions and correct grammar?
Anyway, I'm going to be (hopefully!) finishing the fantasy story that I started writing at the beginning of the year. For a long time I thought I was very far from being halfway finished but now, I think I'm closer than I thought! I'd estimate there is about 30,000-50,000 words of story left. And I'm hoping to get those 30,000-50,000 written during NaNoWriMo. It will be tough, however, since I am writing this story out by hand in notebooks. I'm only eight pages away from finishing the Beatles notebook. I'm going to finish those eight pages and then write in a new, blue, 5-subject notebook bought especially for NaNoWriMo. It's pretty thick and I don't anticipate having to use the whole thing; the rest of the notebook will be used for world building, character building, and a very, very detailed outline in the future.
I can't wait! November is my favorite month.
Are any of you doing NaNoWriMo? Are you writing by hand or typing on the computer? What will you be writing?
Happy Thanksgiving!
What am I thankful for? The usual things... what Jesus did on the cross, enough food, enough money, a nice house, great friends and family, books, a car (not my own - my mom's), clean water, blankets, Rosey, music, piano, chocolate...
What am I especially thankful for this Thanksgiving?
FINISHING NANOWRIMO!
So that I can do this:
And this:
I am so thankful to have both After the Twelfth Night finished (and published!) and to have this year's NaNoWriMo over and done with. My novel-writing juices are all but spent and I'm looking forward to not writing anything big for a few months. It's time to take a well-needed break.
A quick update-y thingy on After the Twelfth Night as long as I'm thinking about it...
1st thing: It's on Goodreads now! Huzzah!
2nd thing: I'm not sure when the eBook will be out... I had really hoped to get it out before Christmas, but now it's looking like that won't be possible. November and December are always the busiest months out of the year for me, what with NaNoWriMo, choir concerts, and other recitals.
We're headed to grandparents for Christmas, and I hope, while there, to work with my dad on the eBook. It will most definitely be out before the end of January, and most like be out earlier than that, unless other things get in the way.
So there is my little update-y thingy.
(Ironically, the one person who would get this joke doesn't check my blog very often. xD)
What are YOU thankful for this Thanksgiving? And are you doing anything special today?
Live long and prosper.
Green Bears.
The typo for today:
"You're as skinny as a green bear!" (I meant bean, for the record...)
I really need to not listen to stupid Star Trek songs while doing NaNo. As long as we're stating things for the record, this wasn't technically a Star Trek song - it was worse. A Monty Python song with a Star Trek video to go along with it.
I couldn't think of what to give my characters for dinner, so I gave them ham and spam an jam (a lot).
By the way... I rewatched The Hobbit the other day for the first time since seeing it in theaters in December (GASP, I know! It was too long!) and Martin Freeman mentions jam. The fandoms online have decided that Martin Freeman is made of jam and kittens and I was wondering if P. Jackson put that line in because he knew that... or maybe Martin Freeman just made it up.
Also, do you think Sylvestor McCoy (the 7th Doctor) was made Radagast the Brown on purpose?
After all, P. Jackson is a Doctor Who fan and I believe that the above episode was filmed before The Hobbit...
He owns two Daleks... OH OH! Speaking of Daleks, did anyone see the Daleks in the background in the newest Emma Approved episode? It's in the background of Charlie's video appointment with Emma.
Well, I'm off to write ten or so more words before heading off for the night (I'm at 22,090. I can't leave it that close to 22,100! I just can't!)
How is NaNoWriMo going for all of you?
Live long and prosper!
Monday, November 11, 2013
The typo of the day.
"Do you think we've been had?" Varina asked.
"Nom," said Daniel.
NaNoWriMo is going pretty well... I was a little down the past few days, but now I'm feeling better about the story again and can continue. I just passed  20,000 words! Yay!
I'm reading three good books... Which is a problem, because I don't know which to read at night! The Hobbit, The Hound of Baskervilles, or Mansfield Park?
Live long and prosper!
The past seven days...
...of NaNoWriMo have passed in a blur.
I'm currently 63 words away from 14,000 words and I'm finally starting to enjoy my novel.
It's titled A Pretty Face Can Hide An Evil Mind. It's a line that comes from this song:
Daniel and Varina, my heroes from my two previous NaNo projects (NaNoWriMo 2012, and Camp NaNoWriMo in April 2013) have to go undercover to stop a dastardly plot to destroy the government.
The first 8,000 words or so were very painful to write. Not because of anything evil... It's just I'm so burned out from all the work on After the Twelfth Night that my writing has fallen to a very low quality. Finally, though, things are starting to warm up. I'm starting to enjoy my characters more. There's more description (the first 8,000 words or so are almost all primary dialogue) and my writing has finally gotten to a level where I feel comfortable sharing snippets!
Here, have the one good piece of writing in all 14,000 words (and it's a very raw "good" piece of writing):
Varina lovingly pulled out Mansfield Park by Jane Austen and settled down to read, forgetting her tiredness for the moment.
Daniel chose a shorter book to read – if, indeed it could even be called a book. He had to search through the bag carefully, but finally he found what he was looking for… Down on the very bottom was a collection of Beethoven sonatas, which he took out and began studying intently, occasionally breaking out in a spurt of humming, while his fingers exuberantly played an invisible keyboard on the bed in front of him.
Mansfield Park because I just started reading it last night and I'm really enjoying it so far! Though I do feel sorry for Fanny.
While my story has started warming up... my character's have decided to turn on me. Alright, maybe not all of them at once... But Daniel has given me two pieces of information - one helpful, and one not-so-much.
The helpful one is that he finally told me his middle name(s)! Lots of ideas and two books later... he finally told me his middle name(s).
Here, have the only other piece of goodish writing from the first 14k:
“So, names,” said the Big Boss. “We were thinking of Rupert for you, Daniel.”
“Sorry,” said Daniel. “Rupert is my middle name.”
“I thought Charles was your middle name?” asked the Big Boss. “That’s what the file says…” he started digging around for Daniel’s file.
“Charles is my middle name, sir…” said Daniel, turning a little red. “But Rupert is my middle name too. Daniel Charles Rupert Adams.”
“The Third?” asked Varina.
“No, but I have high hopes for my first born son,” said Daniel.
As well as giving me his middle names... Daniel has also decided to spring on me that he went to Juilliard for a year in his late teens. Juilliard is one of the foremost music school in the world (I believe... I actually don't know too much about it). I was thinking, okay, that's fine. Just so long as Juilliard isn't in New York. I looked it up. It's in New York! This is a problem, Daniel! Why? Because Daniel is from England and before the first book in my series, he had never been to New York... so I thought. Even now, he's cowering in a corner and apologizing in an adorable stammer. He didn't think it was relevant until now... he's sorry...
Yeah, well, you should have thought about telling me before I started writing this series, Daniel Adams!
I'm not crazy, I promise. Okay, maybe a little crazy.
Anyway, I've been listening to quite a bit of Vivaldi and Paul McCartney. And a song called Weep You No More, Sad Fountains, which I would really like to sing in voice lessons. And I've been listening to a few of the songs from The Great Train Robbery movie. It has a super cool soundtrack.
Well, back to writing! I want to get at least 150 more words before updating my word count and doing something else.
Look forwards to a review of Canterbury Tales coming soon... I finally finished it! Huzzah! That was a painful book to get through.
Come Along, Pond.
Even though I've stayed at home all day, I still wanted to dress up as someone for Halloween. So I chose an easy costume, that doesn't even look like a costume!
Today I was dressed as Amy Pond from Doctor Who. I kind of mitchmatched two of her more popular outfits... Jean skirt, with a plaid long-sleeved top, and leggings.
(Sorry it's sideways... I can't fix it!)
You can see my new haircut too! On Saturday I got my long hair chopped off shorter than it's ever been!
Before:
After:
(Yes, I did turn into Geordi LaForge for this blog post.)
Anyway... I've been busy editing and formatting and doing After the Twelfth Nightish things today. If all goes well, I will self-publish tomorrow! I'm not sure whether that will be in the morning or evening... or even if it will happen at all. So far, we're on schedule, but you never know what will happen.
NANOWIRIMO! It starts TOMORROW! I can't decide if I'm excited or nervous. I am excited about Saturday when I'll hopefully be able to a regional event nearby! AKA, go write with a bunch of other NaNoers.
So what is my NaNo project?
The second book in my spy series. The plot for this one is that Daniel and Varina must go undercover and uncover a diabolical plot to destroy the government (though, personally, I think the government is doing a pretty good job of destroying themselves. They don't need anyone else... But hey, maybe in Daniel and Varina's alternate universe, America is headed in a better direction? You never know!)
More on it later... Tomorrow, or Saturday... or some other time during November.
Live long and prosper!
Gaarrhaldfjakjlsdgadfkhg
Please remove me from my novel before I hurl it across the room and kill it.
My mom and I have been editing literally all afternoon. We've gotten through Part One, but we still have the other two parts to get through before Monday, when I'll send off for my trial copy.
I'm a bit worried that it won't all get done on time. But with God everything is possible, and I'm relying on him a lot to keep my stress level down. I have a peace that everything will work out.
In other news... I am SO excited for NaNoWriMo! Know why? BECAUSE I GET TO SPEND TIME WITH OTHER CHARACTERS!
I love Antony and Antonio and James and Sebastian and all the other characters in After the Twelfth Night... But I've been with them pretty much all summer. Pretty much for two years. I realize that's what being a writer is all about - spending lots of time with the same characters... But when it gets down to going over the book five times in a row checking for spelling mistakes, formatting errors, and generally just making sentences sound better... it gets a little tough to love your novel.
So I'm very excited to spend some time with Daniel and Varina this November.
Who else is excited for NaNoWriMo?
Live long and prosper.
My writing plan.
I've been sitting here in the living room writing.... A rain shower just passed through and I was watching it. The trees were dancing and the ferns were rattling. The rain was coming down hard and sideways, pounding against the windows, begging to come in and get everything soggy.
Now the shower has passed and the sun is setting..... The world is a pinky-reddish color out the front window. In the back everything is standing out sharply against a backdrop of dark grayish-purple skies.
It's quite pretty.
A few days ago I mentioned a writing plan I had come up with.... I shall now present you with it so you guys can keep me accountable (and that I can keep myself accountable too!). I'll do this month by month (and just by the way... during all my own writing stuff, I will most definitely keep up the editing that my friend's give me to read! It really is an honor.):
April: Finish Camp NaNoWriMo.
May: Start work on Part One of After the Twelfth Night. Most of the stuff in here it just fine.... I just need to broaden it and make it a little bit longer - add some more character development.... that sort of thing.
June: Work with Mom on Part Two of After the Twelfth Night.
July: Finish up work on Part One and Part Two if needed.... And send off to those who have offered to edit/go through it for me (THANK YOU SO MUCH YOU GUYS!!!!) before July 14.
August: Wait for editors to send it back... lalalala... Once I receive the edited stuff, I shall start implementing the changes.
September: Go through, changing the things my editors think need to be changed (if I agree with them, hee hee :P). Then go through it one or two more times with my mom (and maybe have Daddy read through it once too).
October: See the above.
November: Hopefully publish on November 1 - the day that NaNoWriMo starts! Also, do NaNoWriMo.
December: Take a well deserved break from writing.
So there is my plan.
And just something random... I got the CUTEST socks at Wal-Mart today!
NaNoThon
Today is the NaNoWriMo marathon and I thought I'd blog while doing it, updating you all on my progress!
So here goes...
Beginning word count: 23,349
Goal: 30,000.
9:58: *in bed* Two minutes until the NaNoThon starts... I could be writing.... Nah, I'll just go back to sleep. I COULD BE WRITING! *gets up*
10:00ish: *turns computer on, feeds the dog, lets her outside* NOOOOOOOOO!!! Computer! Work! Work! Turn on! *momentary moment of panic* Ah, it's working. Good.
10:00ish: Computer turns on. Whew.
10:07: Checks into the NaNoThon twitter, even though I don't have twitter.... Also tries to check the live stream but youtube won't work. -.-
10:10ish: Finally starts writing!
10:23: Starts writing this blog post.
10:27: Gets back to writing.
Word count: 23,595.
Last sentence: They looked around sneakily - just in case anyone happened to be in the office at 1:30AM on New Years; it was the right thing to do - and then entered the Big Boss' office.
Listening to: Junior's Farm by Paul McCartney
10:30: Actually gets back to writing.
10:33: Feeling sneaky because my characters are snooping around in an office where they aren't supposed to be looking for clues... and The Pink Panther theme just came on.
10:46: I'm still waking up.... Only managed 600 words in the past 40 minutes. Also, I'm having a HORRID time spelling the word 'sleuth' correctly. I think I spelled it wrong through the entire first book.... *facepalm*
Word count: 24,016.
Last sentence: "Of course."
Listening to: Nice 'N Easy by Frank Sinatra... Though something from the Master and Commander soundtrack just came on. Adagio (from concerto grosso, I think).
10:49: Finished Chapter 11. I'm actually doing chapters in this one... and they're actually pretty good in terms of chapters. Nice length, nice cliff hangers at the end... Hee hee. Now I'm going to get myself a bowl of cereal so I can escape the Christmas music that came on.
10:52: I'm baaaaaaccck! Miss me? Ha. Nevermind. I got cereal and I must be really tired because I tried to put the cereal in the fridge. *facepalm* My Christmas music has given way to Ken Medema, thank goodness. And now I'm checking the NaNoThon twitter feed.....
Also I'm trying reeeeaaallly hard not ot include a Sherlock quote in my novel.
Right now the sentence is: "Varina," his face went white, "it's the paw print of a wolf!"
I reeeeeaally want to change it to: "Varina," his face went white, "it's the paw print of a giant hound!"
10:58:  Finally getting back to writing... My characters have comfy chairs.
I'm sorry. I have Doctor Who on my mind.
11:00: It's the one hour mark. I don't even have 1,000 words. I have to rectify that! I WILL have 25,000 by 12:00!!
Word count: 24,076
Last sentence: "This adds a whole new dimension to the case!" she sunk down in the Big Boss' comfy chair.
Listening to: Secret Agent Man Theme. Fun fact - a line from this song is the title for the second novel in this spy series.
11:03: GETTING BACK TO WRITING! BYE!
11:12: Changed writing places... Now I'm in the living room instead of the kitchen. Mom's on the phone with Grama (hi Grama!) and I need to concentrate really hard so I need quiet. Music doesn't count. But if there's conversation around I want to listen.
11:18: WOOOOO 1,000 words written today!
Word count: 24,405.
Last sentence: The time was 2:24AM.
Listening to: Jet by Paul McCartney.
11:38: Word count: 25,007 (wooooohooooo!) Only 1,000 words more until I get to where I'm supposed to be today.... Though, as I said yesterday, I'm hoping to get all the way to 30,000 words today!
Last sentence: "Who says I haven't figured out the code already?" Daniel said with a grin.
Listening to: I've Got You Under My Skin by Michael Buble.
12:00PM: Hour #2 is done!
Word count: 25,683. I've written 2,334 words today and I reached my goal of 25k before 12. Now I think I'll get to 26k (which is where I'm supposed to be for today) and then I will take a break. Because, as I said, I have some piano and voice to practice, a shower to take, and some editing to do!
Last sentence: "How do you know that?"
Listening to: Christmastime is Here by the Vince Guaraldi Trio. Yeah.... Christmas music. My computer's playlist of music is on shuffle.
12:21: I think that sitting in that comfy chair in the living room did wonders for my writing... I got a lot more written over there than in the kitchen (where I have since moved back to). Well, I think I shall take a bit of a break now! I'm off to take a shower.
Word count: 26,032.
Last sentence: "Except a super secret code....." Daniel muttered under his breath.
Listening to: The Only Way to Have a Friend is to Be One by AD.
1:00: I'm back. And I have a sneaking suspicion that my long, wet hair will annoy me to death in the next little while.... I'm going to try write a quick 1,000 words and hopefully be done by 1:30. Then I'll have to take another break to do some music. Lunch? Who needs lunch! Granola bars are the new lunch....
I'm back in the living room now. I seemed to write quicker out here.
1:05: Writing starts... NOW
......or once I re-open my document.
1:06: Writing starts... NOW!
1:17: Awww my mom brought me a sandwich, some carrots, and some apple. THANKS MOM!!
Word count: 26,456.
Last sentence: SPOILERS SORRY!
Listening to: The Fury by AD.
1:57: The time has come.... for me to take another break.
Word count: 27,434 (I've written just over 4,000 words today!)
Last sentence: Chapter 12. Haha kidding. "Somewhere quieter!" Varina replied.
I just wrote a brilliant scene though... Daniel and Varina are laughing their heads off because "they forgot to file their paperwork, Wazowski."
Okay, break time! Before this madness continues.
2:40: Doing lip trills.... Warming up for some singing. I don't know why I'm telling you this.
8:51: Back from the banquet at my friend's church! It was fun (although all the 'banquet' consisted of was salad and fondue). I can't decide if I still want to write a bit more tonight or not... Maybe I'll do some editing for Jessica. That sounds good.
Final word count for the night: 27,434 (at the time of this blog post). I wrote just over 4,000 words today!
What did you all do this fine Saturday? Was it fine where you are? Or was the weather bad? Here the weather was bad for the first few hours... then the sun came out... then it POURED rain.
Live long and prosper.
I'm going to camp!
Okay... I'm not going to REAL camp. But I am going to Camp NaNoWriMo!
Camp NaNoWriMo is basically NaNoWriMo.... Except in April (and July. Although the months change each year, I believe).
You can write whatever you want during Camp be it novel, epic poem, screenplay, script, play, novelette, short story... Whatever. You can also choose your own word count.
In 7 days, 3 hours, 34 minutes, and 17 seconds, Camp will start.
I will be writing the second installment in my spy series starring Daniel and Varina. Actually, it's the third installment... The second installment will be written during the July Camp. Why am I writing the third book second? I don't know. It just kind of happened that way.
So, if you don't hear much from me in April..... I have probably been eaten by a plot bunny (or worse, a plot BEAR!) or stung by some mind-dulling-character-destroying poison ivy.
Fare ye well fair blog followers.... I hope I make it out alive.
Live long and prosper.
"I do not cough for my own amusement," replied Kitty fretfully.
My best thinking time is when I'm taking a shower. I don't know why, but my best ideas come when I'm in the shower. As a result, I tend to take 30-45 minute showers because I'm so absorbed in my own thoughts, I wash veeeeerrryy slowly.
This morning I had quite a few "aha!" moments in the shower.
One was another how-Sherlock-survived-the-fall theory. Maybe Kitty, the reporter ("You repel me" girl), had something to do with it! I mean, she had access to Moriarty and Sherlock both. What if Sherlock hired her to spy on Moriarty? That way, he would know Moriarty's plans.
I promise, no more Sherlock theorys... I just can't help it. They started filming season three two days ago. The first episode is called The Empty Hearse which I think is SO hilarious because the book where Sherlock comes back after being "dead" for three years is called The Empty House.
As well as coming up with that theory, I came up with a background and a motive for a character. Perhaps I shall someday elaborate on him because he is quite interesting.
I also did some brainstorming that I have been putting off. I had to figure out a bunch of different ways for people to do stuff. Now I have that figured out and I can go on with the planning of the third novel in my spy series (which I'm writing second because I thought it would be second... but it turns out it fits better as third).
Have I mentioned that I'm doing Camp NaNoWriMo next month? You can set your word count goal for anything that you choose (within the peramiters of 10,000 and 999,999 words I think... I don't remember). I'm going to try and do another 50,000 word novel. The third book in my spy series starring Daniel and Varina. More info on that as it comes.
Yesterday I read a little bit in each book that I'm currently reading. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Pride and Prejudice, The Princess Bride, and even a few pages of The Two Towers!
My library finally got in a copy of Agatha Christie's first mystery starring the detective Poirot. I'll probably start that soon too..... I can never read just one book at a time.
Tomorrow I'm going to Canada for a few days to play board games and Nintendo with my cousin. It shall be fun. But it also means I'll disappear for a few days, which is fine.
I thought I'd do something special to tide you over until whenever I do my next blog post (please note my sarchasm).
Some snippets from various works of mine! Now, since I'm still quite new to the novel-writing sphere, there won't be too many snippets from different novels.... Mostly just After the Twelfth Night and the first spy novel (which I am dreading opening... because it is so rough. I'm afraid).
Enjoy:
   "I would like to go ashore as soon as possible," said Sebastian. "Seeing that the island is large and we all have families we want to get back to-"
   "I don't!" Dogberry piped up. "I have my family here with me!" He patted Jamie on the shoulder; Matthias was under guard in his room.
   ".....Most of us have families we want to get back to-"
   "I don't! I have my Sebastian right here!" Olivia said. "I'm SO glad I came on this little journey!"
   "As I was saying," Sebastian continued loudly, "most of us have families we want to get back to so the sooner we start searching the ialdn for the treasure, the sooner we can get back to our families."
- After the Twelfth Night Part 2.
   "Those beslubbering fat-kidneyed hugger muggers!"
- After the Twelfth Night Part 2.
   In the background the second voice piped up, "Give me that!" and evidently snatched the phone away. "Who are you and what have you done with my sister?" demanded the younger voice which was totally unlike Caroline's sweet tones. Instead, of sweet and quiet, this girl was loud and fiery.
   "I've done nothing with your sister," Daniel replied.
   "What are you? A creeper? A stalker? A murderer? I could have the police there in five minutes! Or the army! How would you like the army? My sister is in the army! She could probably beat you up and kill you! Although that would probably land her in jail....."
   "I-" Daniel attempted to say.
   Just then Varina emerged from her room down the hall.
   "Marines? No! You don't have to call in the marines!" Daniel was saying when Varina rescued him by taking the phone.
- 3rd Spy book (I admit, I wrote the first chapter back in December.)
   "Please, Sebastian, introduce us to your friends and then sit down!" said the fat man.
   "Of course, Uncle," Sebastian replied. He turned and gestured to Antony. "This is Antony. His father saved me from drowning in a ship wreck."
   "Son of a sailor are you?" Sebastian's uncle asked.
   "Yes, sir. Actually, Father was a pirat....." Jamie elbowed Antony in the ribs and he coughed. "Yes, sir."
- After the Twelfth Night part 2.
   Inside the bustling airport, Daniel and Varina got their tickets and headed to their gate to wait for the plane.
   "Let's stop and get something to eat first, please?" Daniel asked.
   "We just had breakfast! Surely you aren't hungry again?" Varina said.
   Daniel shrugged and pointed to a cafe cozily situated between the Hudson News store and a place to buy luggage.
   "I think everyone has luggage here...." Daniel muttered as they past the luggage store.
   "I hope so!" giggled Varina.
- You Don't Find Them, They Find You.
   "Whoa!" said Antony, spotting the sword in Antonio's raised hand. "Are you planning on killing me?" he joked.
   "No," replied Antonio, scowling. He started to walk away from the boy, hoping to lose him.
   "Where are you going? Can I come?" asked Antony, matching Antonio's stride.
   "I'm going to find a friend. And no, you can't."
- After the Twelfth Night Part 1.
   The passengers grabbed their seat rests to keep from jerking about. The wind and rain played tug of war with the plane, jostling it this way and that.
   "I can't believe it!" Varina yelled.
   "What?" Daniel asked in a panicked voice.
   "We met on a plane and now we're going to die together on one!"
   "No one said anything about dying!" Daniel said in the best reassuring voice he could muster. Suddenly the plane went into a nose dive. Everyone screamed and the last thing Varina remembered before she blacked out was Daniel's hand reaching back and grabbing her's.
- You Don't Find Them, They Find You.
So what did you think? Are you interested? I'm still toying with the idea of publishing.... But people have to be interested in my writing in order for me to publish it. Finishing the books would also help. xD
Live long and prosper! Have a good weekend.
New Year, New Plans.
Happy New Year everyone!
2012 was a particularly good year... I am reminded of a Frank Sinatra song.
When I was seventeen.... it was a very good year.... etc.etc.
2012: A Year in Review.
My mother, grandmother, and I went on a trip all the way to the East Coast and lived to tell about it.
I discovered no tonly Sherlock, but Doctor Who, two amazing British shows.
I finished writing two novels.
I went to my grandfather's funeral.
I bought my final American Girl Doll.
My studies have become very important to me, and a high priority.
I read 38 books.
Now it is 2013.
My forthcoming goals are as following...
Continue to study hard.
Write three novels (I found out that there are two more NaNoWriMo's other than the one in November - they are Camp NaNoWriMo and take place in April and July. I was so excited!)
Read at least 40 books, two more than last year.
Grow in my faith in God!
As well as goals, I have ideas for this year as well. Writing ideas.
We own a board game called Defenders of the Realm.
This board game is a cooroprotive game, meaning that all the people play together, instead of against each other. The people play heroes who have to kill minions and the four generals in charge of the minions. It is very hard to win, because there are so many ways to die.
Anyway, the game has a story-like theme and I've thought before about writing a story about it. I never knew what I wanted to do for a plot, though.
Until yesterday. Yesterday when I came up with an idea.
So now I will write this Defenders of the Realm story whenever I have the time, as a side project. It needs a lot of background information, though. (Luckily it doesn't require research - I can make it all up!)
Happy New Year and God Bless you all this year!
Live long and prosper.
