Top Ten childhood/teen books I'd like to revisit.

Once upon a time I did a Top X list every Tuesday; I'm not bringing it back, but I am joining in on The Broke and Bookish's Top Ten Tuesdays meme. You can find out more about it HERE.

This week's topic is top ten books you read as a child or (younger) teen that you wish you could revisit. I'm changing it only slightly to my top ten childhood/(younger) teen books because I frequently revisit most of the books I read as a kid/(younger) teen. What can I say, I love re-reading!

As I began compiling this list in my brain, I realized that I skipped that awkward out-of-picture-books-but-not-quite-to-full-chapter-books stage. You know, the stage where you read The Boxcar Children, Goosebumps, Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Judy Blume, Babysitter's Club, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. The only books like that that I ever read were... well, you'll find out. ;)

Warning: This post contains lots of pictures of books at weird angles. I was having a little too much fun playing with the camera I got for Christmas.

1. Picture books.

Including: Harry the Dirty Dog, Bread and Jam for Francis, Mike Mulligan's Steam Shovel, George the Terrible Eater, The Thingumajig Book of Manners, The Surprise Garden, Tuesday, and Peggy Rathman's books.
Did anyone else read these books with the strange-white-creature-waving-a-bowler-hat as a kid?

Or how about the Little Golden books?

2. Thomas the Tank Engine.

I found this complete collection of Reverend Awdry's stories at Half Price Books one day. I think it's the best book purchase I've ever made (other than the $1 Complete Works of Shakespeare I found at an estate sale once and the beautiful Hobbit book from Barnes and Noble).

3. Richard Scarry.

These are wonderful stories. The TV episodes were great, too.

4. The Magic Treehouse.

These were some of the first chapter books I ever read. I read them all up through about the tenth Merlin Mission.

5. Katie John.

My mom ordered these books from a catalog when she was a kid. They follow the adventures of tomboy Kaite John and her friends (and later her dog). There are two more books after these two, but I never read them.

6. American Girl books.

It's so hard to take pictures of American Girl books when your bookshelf is rainbow colored and some books are in the red sections, some in the blue, some in the orange, some in the purple...

American Girl books had a huge impact on my life. They taught me so much about history and about being a friend. Any and every young girl should read these books (but make sure to get the old versions with the illustrations and "A Look at the Past" sections, not the new versions which have neither).

7. I Am Lavina Cumming.

My mom and I got this book on tape out of the library so many times when I was little. We listened to it over and over and over again. When our library was bought by a rival library and they started getting rid of half of the books and replacing them with computers, we even bought the cassettes from the library to save them. Last year I finally bought an actual book edition and read it for the first time. It is just as delightful as I remember (though shorter. I suppose when you are little, everything seems longer than it is).
I Am Lavina Cumming is a story about a girl who leaves the ranch where she grew up with her father and brothers to live with a maiden aunt, widowed cousin, and terrible second-cousin (is that what the kid of a cousin is called?) in San Francisco, shortly before the San Francisco earthquake.

8. Sharon Creech.

Sharon Creech's books would be classified as "middle grade," I think. I've read nearly all her books, but these three are my favorites and have impacted me the most. I read Bloomability when I need a reminder that it's okay to go outside my comfort zone and try new things. I read Replay when I'm feeling alone and forgotten. I read Ruby Holler when I need a familiar story with a dash of adventure. Sharon Creech is my security author (like a security blanket, only cooler).

9. Tintin and Astrix and Obelix.

This is my Tintin shelf. Complete with Tintin books, books about Tintin, Tintin pencils, Tintin notebook, Tintin in Dutch, Tintin bag, Tintin figurine, and Tintin art project (the moon rocket).
Tintin has had just as big an impact on my life as American Girl. Like American Girl, I learn SO much about history from Tintin. I used to go running to my room to grab a Tintin book during history lessons... I still do that, in fact. In my AP World History class we learned about tensions between China and Japan in the early 1900s; there's a Tintin book for that. The Blue Lotus.

Told ya I was having too much fun with my camera!

10. Warriors.

I graduated from Magic Tree House to the Warriors series by Erin Hunter. This series is about cats who live in clans in the forest. For a good six years this series captured mine and my friend's imaginations. We came up with our own clans; hundreds of days worth of playing Warriors. I wrote my only fanfiction for this series. My very first books were set in the world of Warriors. I had several that I finished.
These books are wonderful, especially the first three series. The cats have their own laws, their own customs, their own naming system, their government system, and even their own religion. I'm thinking about re-reading the whole series (a monumental task, since there are about forty books spanning all five series, not including super editions, mangas, and extra books) this summer and doing a review on it.

Honorable mention:
Garfield.

This flabby, fat, lasagna-loving tabby has followed me through the years. I had a friend when I was growing up who introduced me to Garfield when I was about six or seven. I didn't start reading him right away... but when I did, I read every single book all the way up to #50 or so, plus a bunch of extra books. I even did a report on Jim David, the cartoonist!

What books from YOUR childhood and teenagehood (teenagerdom?) would you like to revisit?

Top Tuesdays: Companions of the Doctor.

I'll probably re-do this after I watch the seventh season, so that I can include Clara.
Here are the five companions from the first six seasons of the re-boot of the TV show Doctor Who!

5. Amy Pond (played by Karen Gillan).

I. Love. Her. Hair. WHAT WERE YOU DOING KAREN GILLAN!!!!! Shaving it all off???!?!!?!! It was beautiful!!!
Anyway, Amy is an alright character. She didn't really POP with me and I liked her better when she was with Rory (or Vincent Van Gogh) as opposed to her with just the Doctor. I think she's a strong character (all the girls in Doctor Who are strong) with an attitude. As far as characters go, she's pretty cool. Not my favorite, but I don't hate her. And her hair is amazing.

4. Martha Jones (played by Freema Agyeman).

When I first started Doctor Who, I was convinced that I was going to hate Martha. After watching the third season, I pleasantly surprised myself. I really like Martha! I think she's a great character. She's got some great episodes (Blink anyone?) and grows a lot over the show. I like how every time she comes back (after the third season is over) we see her getting on in life and loving it, even without the Doctor always by her side.

3. Rory Williams (played by Arthur Darvill).

Rory only slightly beat out Martha and I'm even now considering switching them... But I'll leave him where he is. I like that the Doctor occasionally has a male companion, such as Rory.
After seeing seasons five and six, I can agree that finding a Rory in life would be great. I think he's a great guy. He wants to protect Amy but is slightly goofy and awkward about it. He's a very nice guy. Plus he waited for how many years for Amy?

2. Donna Noble (played by Catherine Tate).

I love Donna. I love how she's not the typical young and skinny companion that the Doctor usually has. I mean, come on, Rose, Martha, Amy, and Clara are all very young. Donna, though still young, isn't twenty or even twenty-three.
When she meets the Doctor (and at the end of the fourth season, *sniff*) she reminds me a bit of Rose's mum - kind of girlish and lost and cares only about gossip and stuff. But when she meets the Doctor, her whole outlook on life changes and she grows so much and becomes such a great person.
One of the best things about Donna is that she is not a love interest. She's the Doctor's best bud - his friend - his mate. ("You ain't mating with me sunshine!")

1. Rose Tyler (played by Billie Piper).

Alright, I admit, I do like Rose because she was the first companion I ever watched. But that's not the only reason I like her. I think she's got one of the more complex storylines in Doctor Who. Her family members and Mickey have their own stories that weave through and intertwine with the Doctor and Rose's.
Rose starts out as a shop assistant whose eyes are opened to how big the world really is. By the end of the first season, she simply can't go back to eating chips, working, and sleeping her life away. She has to be doing something big. And by the end of the second season, the Doctor has become such a big part of her life, that it's horrible when they're *spoilers* separated.
Rose, like pretty much all the rest of the characters in Doctor Who, grows a tremendous amount during the course of the show. That's why I like her.

Top Tuesdays: Top Disney Princesses

11. Tiana from The Princess and the Frog.

The only reason she's last is because I haven't seen The Princess and the Frog and, therefore, can't make any comments about her.

10. Merida from Brave.

Similar story here. I did see Brave a couple weeks ago... But it was with the girls from my youth group and we were having fun doing hair, nails, and makeup at the same time... So I wasn't really watching the movie. I love her hair, though!

9. Aurora from Sleeping Beauty.

I haven't seen Sleeping Beauty for years. Actually, I think I've only seen it once. So, I remember pretty much nothing about it. But I love the lady who plays Aurora.... whose name I can't remember. xD

8. Cinderella from Cinderella.

I don't really like Disney's Cinderella. I haven't seen it for a long time... but I just don't think it can top Roger's and Hammerstein's Cinderella (which I grew up on and love):

I mean, come on, it's got Whoopi Goldberg, Whitney Houston, and Bernadette Peters in it! They are wonderful!

7. Snow White from Snow White and the Seven Drawfs.

Snow White is my dad's favorite Disney princess because he got his picture taken with her in Disneyland.
Like Sleeping Beauty, I have only seen Snow White once and that was a really long time ago.

6. Pocahontas from Pocahontas.

I used to love Native Americans so Pocahontas was a favorite when I was little. Now... I'm not sure if I would like it so much. I don't really remember much. Except in the sequel the love interest "drowns" and she ends up falling in love with someone else (and I liked the first guy better! I think his name was John Smith... so maybe it was better that she fell in love with someone else? Silly Doctor).

5. Ariel from The Little Mermaid.

I haven't seen The Little Mermaid for awhile, but I remember really enjoying it when I was little. I also remember enjoying the Poor Unfortunate Souls song... I don't know what that says about me. xD I always thought Ursula was a cool bad guy (bad lady? Villainess? Bad octopus-thing?).

4. Rapunzel from Tangled.

Come on, who doesn't love Tangled?

3. Belle from Beauty and the Beast.

I love Beauty and the Beast. I think it's a great movie. I love the music and the characters and the Beast's library.... Don't tell anyone, but I kind of based a library in Part Three of After the Twelfth Night after the Beast's library.

2. Mulan from Mulan.

LOVE Mulan! It has so many great quotes and nice music. This is definitely a classic, folks!

And now.... numero uno!

1. Jasmine from Aladdin!

Jasmine has always been my favorite. I can still remember the first time I saw Aladdin... It was my favorite movie for a long time afterwards. And Jasmine has remained my favorite Disney princess. I even had a Polly Pocket Jasmine!

So there you have it!

Live long and prosper.

Top Tuesdays: Top Five Book Trilogies.

I was thinking about book trilogies lately and realized that I have only read five trilogies (that I can remember). Most of the books I read are either stand alone, or in longer series (4+ books).

5. The Larklight Trilogy by Philip Reeve.

The lovely Miss Jack introduced me to these books and Philip Reeve, their lovely author. I did a review on this trilogy sometime last year. You can find the link on the "books" tab.
I really enjoyed this trilogy. The characters were great and the writing was very unique. I am amazed at how creative Philip Reeve is! There are some things to watch out for (some bad words and something in the third book... see my review) but otherwise, these are great books!

4. The Leviathan Trilogy by Scott Westerfeld.

I did a review of these as well.
Ohhh my goodness. These are amazing books. They are set in an alternate version of World War One where machines are up against fabricated beasties.
Scott Westerfeld manages to keep things historically accurate, yet puts his own spin on things. He mixes real people with his own characters (which are amazing). Also, the books are illustrated by the very talented Keith Thompson - whose drawings are in black and white and are VERY detailed. That's one of my favorite parts of the books.

3. The Doll People by Ann. M. Martin (and some other people).

The Doll People, The Meanest Doll in the World, and The Runaway Dolls.
I don't remember the first time I read/listened to/was read these books... but they have remained some of my favorite children's books since I was a very young girl. I've always been a fan of dolls and what's not to like about dolls coming to life? These are great books, especially for younger children. I recently re-read them... They went by a lot quicker than I remembered! And the writing style is kind of simple - something a little girl wouldn't notice.

2. The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall.

Oh my goodness... I LOVE these books so much. They are about four sisters and their Hound. They get into so many adventures and are portrayed so realistically... These are great books for all ages. When she wrote these books, Jeanne Birdsall wanted to capture the books she grew up reading: E. Nesbit, Eva Ibbotson, and those types of authors (who write clean, appropriate stories about siblings just being siblings). I've said it before that I love books about siblings and The Penderwicks are tied with The Enchanted Castle for having the best sibling-adventure stories.
Next year, this won't be able to fit into the trilogy category, because that's when the fourth book comes out. And a fifth is planned to come out in the future as well.

Drumroll......

1. Lord of the Rings!

Of course! Tolkien is my favorite author and, despite the fact that I have been reading The Two Towers for almost a year now, The Lord of the Rings are some of my most favorite books ever.

And now a few honorable mentions.... The Crater series by Homer Hickam. It is supposed to be a trilogy, but only the first two books are out so far. And I haven't even read the first one yet... But I thought I'd mention it.
Also, the No Place Like Holmes series is going to be a trilogy, I believe.
And lastly... Inkheart by Cornelia Funke. I love Inkheart... But when I tried to read the rest of the trilogy... eh.... I didn't like it very much. It got a lot darker, which I didn't like. And also, she killed off my favorite character! I've noticed that when I my favorite character dies/when I know they are going to die, I tend to stop reading series. It happened with Inkheart, The Hunger Games, and Fever Crumb. Let that be a warning to you authors out there - kill my favorite character and you lose me as a reader! I'm just kidding.

How about you all? Do you read many trilogies? What are some of your favorites?

Live long and prosper!

Top Tuesdays: Top Five Muppets.

I am a HUGE fan of The Muppets. Although I liked them better before the Jim Henson company was sold to Disney.... But let's not get into that right now.

Here are my top five favorite Muppets!

5. Sgt. Floyd Pepper.

Floyd is the bass player for the band Electric Mayhem. He is named after the Beatles album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. He's a rockin' dude and just plain cool. He has sort of a raspy voice... and is the one who can keep Animal under control.

4. Kermit the Frog.

Kermie. Is there really anything else you can say about this little green frog that has had such a big impact on society? He's the best frog around.

3. Gonzo.

Gonzo is a "Whatever." Even he doesn't know who he is or where he comes from... if there are others like him in the world.
In the Muppet Show, Gonzo is always attempting crazy stunts. He is also the one to blow the trumpet at the beginning of every episode.
Gonzo's best friend is Rizzo the Rat (though not until the movies) and his true love is Camilla the Chicken.
I've always related a bit to Gonzo.... I'm strange. I don't seem to fit anywhere. I have friends wherever I go, but I never seem like I fit in with their crowd.

2. Rowlf.

The piano playing dog with a heart of gold. I love him so much. He's just so sweet.

Drumroll.....

1. Zoot.

The sax player for Electric Mayhem. I can't even really explain why he's my favorite - he just is.
Zoot barely talks after the first season and he always seems to be in the background being mysterious. He also plays saxophone, which is very cool.

So there you have it! My five favorite Muppets.

And, here is a little clip from the Muppet Show starring Floyd, Zoot, and Dr. Teeth.

Three hundreeeeeeddd!!!

It's my 300th blog post!

Watch this video to understand my blog title:

Guess who finished her first edit of Part One of After the Twelfth Night last night? "CONGRATULATE ME MAX!"
=D

Now to start on the read through of Part One, fixing what little things I missed....

In honor of this first leap towards publishing, I have decided to reveal one of my secret projects! The big one - the one that I have been talking about (I'm still a tad bit iffy on the other one, that's why I'll wait to reveal it).

Meet the cast of the...

So yes. I am in the works of making a book trailer for After the Twelfth Night with my dolls! Personally, I think book trailers are kind of weird... Because, you know, it's a book, not a movie. I wasn't planning on doing one and then I thought WAIT A MINUTE! I could do it with dolls! Then it would be super cool! So that's what I'm doing. Look forwards to the trailer sometime in the summer... August maybe. Or maybe, since the book isn't coming out until November, the trailer will come out in September or October.

And finally, here is Top Tuesdays! Top favorite TV shows (in order, this time).

Top Tuesdays: My favorite books (in no particular order). PLUS some questions for you all.

My question for you all has to do with that secret thing I mentioned last week sometime.... (It seems like everyone and their uncle has a secret project nowadays).
My question to you is:

Which American Girl dress do you like better (keep in mind that the doll is very rich, worldly, and has just had her husband kidnapped. Yes, that sounds weird. Just roll with it for now):

 OR

Second question.... Which hairstyle do you like better (keeping the same things in mind):
 OR

(They are basically the same style.... Only the first one is the two braids on the top of the head, and the second one is the two braids just above the nape of the neck.)
Now I think I shall get to editing!

Live long and prosper.

P.S. Do you like the new blog look? Blue and purple are two of my favorite colors (along with red; but I don't think that goes with the other two colors) and I figured I needed something more springy, light, happy, and less brown. The brown was nice... But too dark for spring/summer. Plus I've had the other template since last summer - it was time for a change. A pretty, beautiful, PURPLE and BLUE change! =D
