A decision and an apology.

On a somewhat related topic...
Remember THIS post, reviewing the final episode of season three of Sherlock?
It disgusts me. I disgust me.
Once, I came across someone's blog where they said, "This one show is a great show, but one of the seasons has a whole bunch of stuff that goes against the Bible and it makes me really angry, but I'm going to keep watching because the characters are worth it!"
That post made me so angry. It's TV show! You're really going to watch something that makes you angry because it portrays God negatively, just because the characters are good?
Then I realized something. I had forgotten to take the plank out of my own eye before looking for the speck in this other blogger's eye (Luke 6, Matthew 7).
I did the exact same thing that this other blogger did. In my review of His Last Vow I basically said, "Even though the moral principles were thrown out the window in this third season of Sherlock and it offended me deeply, I'm going to keep watching the show because I have to find out how Moriarty survived!"

I want to apologize to every one of you for that post. I'm so sorry. My attitude concerning Sherlock was completely wrong and I don't want any of you to think that it's okay to brush away the sinfulness in entertainment, just to find out what happens next.

That being said, I've come to a decision.
I've decided that when Sherlock season four comes around, I'm not going to watch it. I have become increasingly dissatisfied with the show as it has progressed. This third series pushed me over the brink, and I'm making that clear now.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

Your post truly challenged me. I have frequently watched BBC's Sherlock on PBS here in the United States. I have frequently wrestled with the the spiritual implications of watching Sherlock.     1. The Rebelution is a great site, and I am totally for Doing Hard Things.
      I watched Sherlock on PBS too. It's going to be hard when the fourth season comes around. It's so sad, because Sherlock really is a well-made show, and very well acted. The first season was really great. The second season was alright... but the plotlines were rather confusing (and that first episode... just awful). I was expecting a lot of greatness from the third season, but I feel like instead of giving us quality television, the writers catered the season right to the tastes of the fangirls (and boys) and added a lot of unnecessary, and, frankly, what I consider to be unprofessional (not to mention inappropriate), material.

  2. I agree with Abbey. Makes me wonder if I shouldn't stop too (or Doctor Who for that matter). It has always been so, SO, SO hard for me to find ANY TV shows I like, much less love like those two. I used to love Harry Potter as well but quit because I had come to realize that entertaining or not, it's still glamorizing witchcraft and frankly just because JK tells us the heroes are the heroes doesn't mean they act like it.

    I really admire your honest confession and decision to stop. I'm not so strong unfortunately, though I do want to do what's right- I just dont always know what it is.
